Queensland, beautiful one day, perfect
the next. At least, that's what the tourism people would like you to believe.
Whether it's true or not is firmly in the eye of the beholder, but its
railway scene remains one of the most interesting in the country. Alone among
governments, Queensland remains committed to maintaining at least some semblance
of service to towns that other states have long since forsaken in the
name of commercial efficiency. When I moved to Queensland in 1989, it was
still possible to see the most remarkable combination of state of the art
technology and operation running cheek by jowl with workings that belonged
to an era more akin to a quarter of a century earlier. This state of
affairs is rapidly changing, but there is still much to see and observe
on Queensland Rail.
This collection of galleries shows a small selection of scenes I've recorded on the railways that start west of Brisbane. Along Queensland Rails 2 will look at Brisbane itself, and work its way north.
