Coal is perhaps one of the more prosaic
sorts of things that any transport entity might be called on to shift. Prosaic
or not though, it is the dominant traffic task in much of Queensland and
NSW, shifting tens of millions of tonnes of the stuff every year, with most
of that for export. Coal trains thus figure predominantly in rail photography
in these areas, and I am no exception. It may come as a surprise, but Tasmania
too has a reasonable presence of coal trains, even if the total annual output,
produced entirely for local consumption, is shifted every few days in
Queensland.
In this gallery, I have some put together some images of coal trains taken over the years in both Tasmania and Queensland, never really having been in a position to pursue the coal trains of NSW.
