Although possibly somewhat ignored by locals, Brisbane boasts
a good suburban railway system, well served by modern air-conditioned trains
on seven routes radiating from the CBD. Progressively electrified from the
late 1970s on, it still had a number of locomotive hauled trains to cover
peak hour services. The trains, seven car sets themselves
built for a 1950s electrification scheme that was never completed, did eventually
find themselves hauled by electric traction, but by AC locos rather than
being converted to electric multiple units as called for under the original
plan. Indeed, these suburban sets had the distinction of being
hauled by steam, then diesel and then electric traction, a rare if not
unique circumstance in Australia and possibly the world.
Anyway, needless to say these trains form the subject of most of the photos in this selection of suburban trains around Brisbane.
